This page lists all 77 of Chicago’s official community areas in alphabetical order. Each name links to its own page in the Chicago Neighborhoods directory, which covers where the area sits and what it borders, its ‘L’ and Metra stations, CTA bus routes, parks, library branches and ward boundaries.
The area number is the City of Chicago’s official community area number, 1 (Rogers Park) through 77 (Edgewater). Sizes are in square miles, measured from the City’s official boundary for each area.
Two citywide tables cover all 77 areas side by side: Chicago housing stock by community area, which counts houses, two-flats, condos and apartment buildings in each, and Chicago ‘L’ stations by community area, which shows which area every station is actually in.

About This List of Chicago Community Areas
Chicago’s 77 community areas were first mapped by University of Chicago researchers in the 1920s and are still used by the City for planning and data. They range from Burnside and Oakland, each about 0.6 square miles, to O’Hare at 13.3 square miles. Chicagoans use many more neighborhood names in everyday speech; this list covers the 77 official areas only, and it is a directory, not a ranking.
Boundaries and sizes come from the City of Chicago’s Boundaries — Community Areas dataset. For the full details on any area, open its page, or browse all of them on the Chicago Neighborhoods page.
